A high-priced Persian rug is not merely a flooring in the Dallas architecture of the Uptown, with its glass-walled penthouses, to the old mansions of Highland Park. It is an investment, a part of nomadic history, the soul of a designed room. But there is the unique responsibility of being a masterwork owner, such as a hand-knotted Tabriz, Kashan, or Heriz: preservation.
We have been in the Dallas Design District for decades, assisting collectors and homeowners in securing their investments. The climate of North Texas, with high UV radiation and humidity fluctuations, does not allow a passive approach to rug care. Your rug is to be preserved on a grand, long-term scale to ensure it becomes a legacy for generations to come.
The Preservation Foundation: Strategic Placement
The life of a Persian rug begins before it hits the floor. The location and position of your rug is what will dictate how fast you wear it and the way it will be susceptible to environmental stressors.
Managing the Texas Sun
The Buffer: Do not put the edge of a rug directly up against the floor-to-ceiling glass. Even a buffer of 12 to 18 inches will greatly lessen the concentrated load of the fibers, that is, the light load.
The Critical Impact of High-performance Padding
Rugs without a pad are in constant motion. In busy households, the friction between the rug base and a hard floor (hardwood, stone, or tile) will wear the knots away over time, creating a microscopic sandpaper-like effect.
The Choice: Buy a hybrid felt-pad of rubber. The rubber surface prevents it from slipping on the floor, and the thick felt surface makes it a cushion absorbing the impact of the foot traffic, so that the structural integrity of the pile is not compromised.
Sophisticated Vacuity Procedures: Frictionless Suction
Although dust elimination is a crucial task, one of the most common causes of the deterioration of hand-knotted fabrics is improper vacuuming. The wool and silk highlights common to Persian masterpieces are frequently too sensitive to modern vacuums, which are frequently too rough.
The "No-Beater Bar" Mandate
Do not apply a rotating beater bar or power brush vacuum to a high-value rug. They are designed to fuzz the wall-to-wall carpeting that is synthetic and will shred the wool, strain the silk, and ultimately, take the fringe away.
The Method: Have a canister vacuum with an upholstery setting or have a suction-only setting.
Direction: When vacuumed against the nap, the grit is forced further into the foundation.
Interior Cleaning: The "Back-Side" Vacuum
Vacuum the other side of your rug every six months. This loosens up some heavy grit that has got in the bottom of the knots--grit which can never be removed by suction alone at the top. Vacuum the back, after which you should turn the rug and vacuum the upper part again to make sure that the debris that was not removed comes out.
Rotational Strength: Overcoming Uneven Wear
Traffic lanes are unavoidable in the open-concept homes that are prevalent in North Texas
Uniformity: This is to make sure that the wear is evenly distributed on the entire surface. Assuming that fading does take place through exposure to light, then it will do so evenly, forming a desirable patina instead of an ugly bleached spot.
Fringe Preservation: Rotation ensures that one side of the fringe is not stepped on continuously, thus causing breakage as well as resulting in the sliding off of knots from the foundation.
Why Surface Cleaning Fails
The approaches frequently result in the dampness of the thick cotton base of the rug and, consequently, in dry rot, a condition that makes the base fissile and easily torn.
The Rencollection Method: In our special plant, the rugs are immersed in a normal immersion wash. This is done through a comprehensive dusting and then submersion in special pH-balanced solutions that help to remove oils and grit gently at the bottom of the fibers.
The Drying Process: Rugs are then dried in a controlled climate to guarantee that the fibers will once again be fresh and shiny in a springy state without the threat of mildew.
Pest Prevention: Guard against the Unseen
Visual Clues: Watch out to see that there has been grazing (places where the pile appears to be thinner), there are some white casings that resemble grains of rice, or there are small flying insects in the room.
The Professional Shield: When a person is having a professional wash, they have the option of using a moth-deterrent treatment. The treatments are not odorous and are colorless, yet make the wool unappetizing to larvae, which offers an invisible protection layer.
Emergency Spill Response: The Doctrine of Blot, Don't Rub
Spills are an occurrence in a home that will be used as an entertaining environment. The first sixty seconds will either make the spill a thing of the past or an indelible mark.
The Protocol
Blot Instantly: Clean white cotton towel. Squeegee to get out all the liquid possible.
Never Rub: Rubbing a spill will loosen or break the fibers of the wool and bloom the pile permanently changing the feel of the pile.
Professional Consultation: In case it is red wine, ink, and pet urine spill, call Rencollection immediately. These elements may change the pH of the dyes and trying to stabilize them using domestic chemicals may result in permanent color leakage.
