Wool is extraordinarily tenacious. When viewed under a microscope, wool fibers are overlapped with scales that are natural liquid repellents in the short term. This is a lanolin lube coat. But after the liquid penetrates the fiber's cortex, it may become stubborn.
Silk, however, is the queen of the rugs gang, and she is like a Queen.
Since Ren Collection works with these luxury natural fibers, our stain-removal method prioritizes the safety of the weave.
It is only one thing to which I would wish to draw your attention in this guide: never wipe up a spill on a homemade rug.
Red wine is acidic and contains tannins, which are natural compounds found in grape skins. It appears dismal on a light-colored Oushak or a cream Persian rug. However, when you make a quick move, you can handle it.
After blotting up the excess liquid, you must remove the remaining moisture from the fibers.
If any stain remains after the salt treatment, use a pH-neutral cleaning solution.
Coffee is deceptive. It appears natural and harmless, and it is a hot tannin-containing liquid that can attach too fast to wool fibers. Proteins and sticky residues that can attract pests would also be an issue in case the coffee had milk or sugar in it.
In case the coffee was burning hot, then you should allow the fibers to cool down during blotting. The heating of wool fibers renders them open to dyeing. Place a dry towel at once in order to get off most of the liquid.
Coffee is acidic. We fight it sometimes with vinegar, in the same way we fight the wine.
Wipe the stain using a sponge or cloth that has been dipped into your solution. The brown you can see pervades your clothes. Continue till you are no longer transferred.
Pro Tip: In case the coffee had cream or milk, then it is a protein stain. Once the first cleaning is complete, in case a mark is left behind, then an enzymatic cleaner specially made to clean wool may be applied, though it should always be tried on a small and inconspicuous area first. The protein is enzyme-digesting, but silk is also a protein; thus, never apply enzyme cleaners on silk rug flooring.
The drying agent of the foundation (the cotton warp and weft) of a hand-knotted rug is moisture. When a rug remains wet too long, it may result in mildew or dry rot, or browning (cellulosic browning) where the water will wick up to the surface.
Do not fear spills to keep you off those beautiful rugs. A home is meant to be lived in. It is the small touches, which build up through the decades the abrash of colour, the slight wear-and-tear marks, and, surely, the anecdotes of a dimly remembered dinner party, which render a home a soul.
When you treat your wool and silk rugs with respect, patience and appropriate methods, you will make sure that they are very lively and comfortable for generations to come.
